The Blue Dragon (also called blue slug and Blue Dragon, in English) is a mollusk that appears in all the world’s oceans, usually in temperate or tropical waters. This mollusk, which is Glaucidae family, can also be called “Blue Fleet” due to a phenomenon that occurs once in a while, where hundreds (or even thousands) of these molluscs appear floating aimlessly in the sea, creating a visually stunning spectacle.
But do not be fooled by the appearance of this bug: although it is very small (the Glaucus Atlanticus can get to measure 4cm, while his younger brother, the Glaucus marginatus, no more than 2cm), this animal carries on its ends a dangerous toxin can cause great pain or even kill a human, depending on the amount of toxin released. The Blue Dragon loose your venom when touched (just like the jellyfish), so the show is shipping them to be seen from afar.
One of the main foods of blue dragons are the jellyfish known as caravels, Portuguese (Physalia physalis), species of jellyfish extremely dangerous and have the same habitat of our blue friend from up there, especially in Hawaii. What you might not know is that the blue dragon can absorb the venom of the Portuguese caravels-ingest it, keeping the toxin on their ends - and turning it into something much more powerful and deadly.
Now you know: if you are on vacation at the beach and see a lot of these beautiful animals floating in the sea, do not be fooled: quit running. As much beautiful that exists in nature, the fluctuation of blue dragons is a sight to be seen from afar.
After all … it is something beautiful to see, no one will see an erupting volcano up close, is not it?
